THORNE FAMILY DESIGN LEGACY
Remembering Beverley D. Thorne, Modernist Architect, 1924-2017
David Thorne’s father is modernist architect, Beverley D. Thorne. Widely known as “Bev,” he is perhaps best remembered for his Case Study homes as well as designing jazz musician, Dave Brubeck’s residential home in Oakland.
Thorne designed over 200 steel-framed homes in the San Francisco Bay Area and California. His innovative use of steel and glass in residential house and sleek mid-century designs garnered attention early in his career.
His most popular buildings, the Brubeck House, was built in the 50’s, and Case Study House #26, was done in the 60’s. The Case Study House Program, solicited by Arts & Architecture Magazine, was a monumental achievement for mid-century and modernist architecture and included designs from other great architects such as Charles and Ray Eames, Richard Neutra, Pierre Koenig, and more.
Thorne is distinctly remembered for his timeless designs, choice of building materials, incredible work ethic and enduring love of architecture.
