CHAPARRAL HILLSIDE

Situated above the Briones reservoir, this home is held by minimal lines and a modern aesthetic to focus attention on the sweeping views of the chaparral hillsides beyond. The owners desired open and warm spaces for gathering that maintained an intimate relationship with the natural environment. The program included a pool to accommodate a competitive water polo team and to provide frequent respite for the family. We responded by lowering the grade of the pool area to optimize views and connect to the lower level family room and home office. We also added an intermediate patio level to gracefully connect both levels of the home and draw people easefully in and out of the garden.

Masses of native California grasses seamlessly blend into the hillside while also providing year-round visual interest. Corten steel walls provide texture, bold form, and rustic color serving as the perfect foil between the constructed environment and the uncultivated hillside. A sleek and narrow pool coping draws the eye to the horizon and maximizes the serenity of the space.
