CONTEMPORARY RETREAT

Winner of a 2022 APLD Gold Award, Residential Design

This project embraces the rectilinear shape of the property and utilizes clean lines and modern geometry throughout the rest of the landscape. Hosting guests was a big part of the client’s lifestyle thus indoor-outdoor spaces were thoughtfully designed to accommodate large groups for entertaining, live music, and other events.

The landscape encourages easy movement and minimizes boundaries between spaces. Oversized pavers frame and brighten up the pool area, while linking to all other areas of the garden. Artificial turf was mindfully selected for the clients’ active children given its practical use year-round and drought-tolerance. A fountain is gently nestled into the earth while nearby trees provide color, depth and contrasting shadows, matching the stonework of the patio. The spacious pool serves as a focal point from inside the house, coexisting harmoniously with the house and the rest of the landscape.

The client’s New England origins were sincerely considered when developing a plant palette. Prairie plants and low-water plants were desired to reflect an east/west hybrid. The existing trees on the property’s perimeter informed the overall palette and simplicity of materials and colors.
